Business Growth Lessons from My Movie Theater
James Wedmore

TL;DR: This Week in The Digital CEO Weekly👇
âś… Elevating your role is the real growth lever. The moment you stop being the technician and step into the manager/foreman role, you remove yourself as the bottleneck and your business instantly speeds up.
âś… The Law of Constraints is always at play. Your business can only grow as fast as its slowest point, and more than half the time you are that constraint until you delegate, let go, and promote yourself.
✅ Fun is the ultimate success secret. After 19 years, James’ simplest truth remains: if you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong, because fun fuels sustainability, creativity, and long‑term success.
From the Desk of James Wedmore:
My little "Star Wars" movie theater reminded me of the most UNDERRATED Business Growth Lever that I DOUBT you are taking advantage of.
Imagine this...
You have this crazy idea to D.I.Y. an entire room in your basement. But it's not just the framing and drywall... No. It's a full-on Sci-Fi Movie Set. Complete with blinking lights and sound effects!
Then imagine... you ALSO have no idea how to build any of this. But you decide to do it anyway.
That was me 307 days ago.
And I've made tremendous progress. Yet I still barely see a light at the end of the tunnel.
When I'm not working, I do my best to squeeze in a few hours down in the basement. First I have to stare at a blank wall... sort through hundreds of "inspo" photos... and then design something on paper.
Ok, I have what I want! But how the heck do I do it?! Cue the hours of YouTube tutorial videos, a few trips to Homey D, and slowwww progress as I try to bring my vision to life.
When a friend asked me, "When do you think you'll be done?"
My answer was simple, "if I'm finished in a year from now, that would be a miracle."
So... about a week or two ago, I felt the itch to accelerate the pace and shorten my timeline. I love working on this project, but there are a few projects that I wanted to outsource.
Fast forward to this past Friday, and I had two guys showing up at my house with tools in hand, ready to get to work.
They took one look at my vortex of a mess, and they were just as overwhelmed as I was.
"We'd love to help, but where do we even begin?"
"This is the magic moment, so listen closely."
I immediately went to work on the Project's Punch List. I got all the supplies and tools needed for each job. I had plans, suggestions, and next steps ready.
So, here's the Punch Line:
In two days, these two guys got more done than I would have done in a week! ...maybe two?!
BUT... I didn't "work." I wasn't in there with them.
No, no, no!
I was immediately upgraded to "foreman"? Can I call myself that?!
In fact, I had to spend ALL of my time, planning and prepping for the next project. I was no longer the "worker bee." I was the MANAGER.
It was simple. Obvious. And intuitive.
But in business... not so much.
You hire someone because you want "help." Then you resent them because they end up taking YOUR time. They have questions, need feedback, and approvals. And we go, "geez, I don't have the time to do MY work now."
Except the Truth is... THIS is your work now.
You see, the MOMENT you hire anyone to help in any capacity, you are immediately ELEVATED to a ROLE of Manager.
And this is a good thing! If you stay the technician in your business, you're not going to make much money.
This is also why I say:
The role you fill determines the results you receive.
So... what is the most POWERFUL and overlooked BUSINESS GROWTH LEVER?
I call it simply:
The Promotion.
When you give yourself the promotion, you elevate your role. You simultaneously delegate and let go of the low-value activities that were eating up your time. This forces you to focus on higher-value work, which always causes growth.
In the Star Wars Movie Theater example, "growth" is measured through "SPEED." Because I elevated my role to Project Manager (and literally didn't pick up a single hammer or nail the entire weekend), I could keep my team moving without the bottlenecks.
Here's the real "Secret" to why this is soooo darn powerful.
The Law of Constraints
Every single business owner (hey that's you!) must put on their required reading list: "The Goal" by Eliyahu Goldratt. In it, the author shares this concept around the Law of Constraints.
Simply put, we must assume that your business, no matter what level you're at, has a constraint or a bottleneck. Your business can only operate and move at the speed that this bottleneck allows. Growth is damn near impossible until we remove that bottleneck.
Well, guess what? In this type of business, more than 50% of the time, you are the bottleneck. The entire concept of elevating your role or giving yourself the promotion is to remove yourself as the bottleneck.
This is why that silly belief of "if you want it done right, just do it yourself!" or "it would have been faster if I would have just done it!" is complete and utter nonsense and is hurting you.
That is the ego's need for control and the verbal manifestation of a bottleneck in action. But the reality is you can't do everything in a business, and the more you try, the more you become the constraint.
This is also why something I've been saying for years is so powerfully true:
The less YOU DO, the more YOU'LL MAKE.
This isn't about laziness. This isn't about sitting around drinking daiquiris watching the sunset every day, and then magically expecting your business to just grow without you.
NO! This is about one thing: ELEVATE your ROLE out of the TECHNICIAN ROLE as quickly as possible and you will REMOVE CONSTRAINTS that throttle your growth.
IF you take any version or shade of what I'm inviting you to do, here is EXACTLY what will happen:
âś… You'll get other people to do things quicker than you could.
âś… You'll conserve energy (no longer drained by BS stuff)
âś… You'll have more fun
âś… You'll see things more clearly
âś… You'll have more structure
âś… You'll move faster
âś… You'll enjoy your business and live more.
...but most reading this will say things like, "I'm not ready to outsource" or write this off and scoff at it because they still have massive control issues. Or worse, "124 AI agents will just run my whole business for me"
So, I guess all I can say is: don't believe me. Just TRY it.
IF you have MADE a dollar, you are in business. And if you are in business, you have a CONSTRAINT. And you probably already see it's you. So... fix it!
Then you too can build Star Wars props like meeeee! haha!

THE SECRET to BUSINESS SUCCESS
As many of you know, I'm also running a 30-day challenge to help our students launch their digital product for the first time, and we're at about the halfway mark. So much stuff comes up for people: imposter syndrome, distractions, and all the other nasty thoughts and voices that they entertain in their head.
Stepping into the role of a personal brand can be very confronting for a lot of people. I like to share some thoughts with those students to keep them moving along, and I've included a post that I shared with them the other day:
When people tell you "there is no secret to success," that's simply because they aren't successful. Sad, resigned people who give up on their dreams think it's easier to believe "there is no secret."
But there are many.
And if the word "secret" means "little known truths," then there are absolutely little known truths to success. Cuz they definitely aren't WIDELY known truths... otherwise more people would have success. And success is a loaded word for people. But it has a VERY... VERY simple definition:
Success is simply getting what YOU want.
That's all. So, here is the "secret" to getting what you want in business. NOTHING will cause more SUCCESS in your business than this right here... GUARANTEED.
And before I reveal it (because everyone wants it fast, now, "tell me, tell me"... and they don't value simplicity... when simplicity IS the most valuable) ...consider the messenger sharing this:
I've been doing this for 19 years. I did not just "get lucky" one time. This isn't a fluke. It's something that has been REPEATED. REPRODUCED. SCALED. SUSTAINED. For 19 years.
The Secret: Have Fun.
That's it. That's all. Have as much fun as possible. IF you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong. Fun is a choice. And you have free will. So either make it fun or do something that is fun. But there is no other reason to be doing this than: TO HAVE FUN. To enjoy it.
And of course, some will argue with me, "no, it's my purpose, my calling, I need to be of service." Cool, so if it is... and you're not having fun doing this business IN your Purpose, you've simply created a toxic, codependent relationship with your clients where you get to put a bandaid over your core wounds while you get momentary hits of "being needed" by strangers... and then you call that "service."
You being a martyr for your marketplace is not the goal. And that's not fun.
And most importantly, it's not sustainable. So, have fun. Million Dollar advice right there. Yet... most... will never take that advice. I mean... they'll hear it.
And in a year from now, I can ask them, "How's business?" "Oh James, so stressful. You wouldn't believe how hard this has been... and that... and this over here... and poor me with problems and clients..." Sounds like it hasn't been fun for you.
Thanks for reading, have a wonderful week!
Cheers,
James Wedmore
